Nikki Bascome: Capturing the Quiet Power of a Bermudian Fighter

His journey is one of discipline, growth, and staying true to his roots.
Nikki’s early life was marked by profound loss. He lost both of his parents before the age of six, along with two siblings. These early experiences led to a difficult period in his youth, as he struggled with grief, depression, and a sense of direction. Everything changed when he discovered boxing as a teenager. With the guidance of a few positive mentors, he began a new chapter built on purpose and discipline. Today, programs like the Bermuda Boxing Federation’s youth initiatives continue to offer young Bermudians the same kind of structure and support that helped shape Nikki’s path.
Nikki Bascome’s Presence Brings a Different Kind of Energy
I’ve known Nikki for several years. One of our earlier collaborations was on the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s “What I Love About Bermuda” campaign. Even then, it was clear that Nikki Bascome carried a unique energy. He is someone who doesn’t speak much, but the moment he is in his element, there is an undeniable presence.
When planning this shoot, I knew I wanted to go in a different direction. In Bermuda, it is common to photograph public figures against stunning beaches or dramatic backdrops. With Nikki, that didn’t feel like the right approach. His story is rooted in something more personal. Instead of putting him in a polished setting, I wanted to show him in a space that reflected his journey.
Back to Ord Road
We went to Nikki’s home neighborhood in Ord Road, Warwick. It’s an area that is often overlooked in glossy portrayals of Bermuda, but it is where Nikki’s story begins. Shooting there added authenticity to the images and gave us a chance to show the real connection between Nikki and his community.
What stood out most during the shoot was how many people came out to speak with him. People stopped their cars to shake his hand. Neighbors called out to congratulate him. It was clear to the people who live there that Nikki Bascome is more than an athlete. He represents something greater. He is living proof that your circumstances do not define your future, much like fellow Bermudian athlete Flora Duffy, whose store we also had the privilege of capturing

Nikki met every comment and compliment with humility. He listened, nodded, and smiled. You could tell he appreciated the words, even if he wasn’t entirely comfortable being the center of attention. In a world where many athletes are known for being loud or self-promoting, Nikki stands apart. He leads by example and lets his actions speak for themselves.
A Favorite Moment
One moment that captured the spirit of the day happened when a guy pulled up on a motorbike wearing a shirt from Nikki’s Fresh & Hungry clothing line. He was proud to be wearing it, and even prouder to support someone he knew personally. We took a few frames of the two of them together, relaxed and standing in a spot they both knew well. Those images are among my favorites. They say everything without needing to say much at all.
The Bigger Picture
This shoot reminded me of why I do this kind of work. It’s not just about creating polished photos. It’s about telling stories that reflect the truth of a person’s journey. Nikki’s story is powerful because it is real. He has overcome so much and continues to rise while never forgetting where he came from.
In a place as small and interconnected as Bermuda, stories like Nikki’s matter. They show that greatness can come from humble beginnings. They remind us that strength can be quiet. And they prove that even in the face of loss, something beautiful can grow.
