Flora Duffy: Strength, Grace, and Bermuda’s Spirit Through the Lens

Flora Duffy is a name that carries weight on the global stage. Hailing from the small island of Bermuda, Flora has risen to international acclaim through years of tireless dedication, perseverance, and love for her sport. Her victories include:

• Olympic gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Games — Bermuda’s first Olympic gold
• Two-time ITU World Triathlon Series World Champion (2016, 2017)
• Six-time XTERRA World Champion (2014–2017, 2019, 2021)

In later years, she captured Bermuda’s first-ever Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games, forever cementing her place as a national hero.

Meeting Flora and photographing her for this special project with the Bermuda Tourism Authority was a privilege that I will always remember. It was more than just a shoot; it was an opportunity to work alongside someone who embodies the spirit of Bermuda through and through.

From the start, my excitement was impossible to hide. Flora is not only at the top of her game physically, but she also represents Bermuda to the world with authenticity, humility, and strength. Working with her gave me a glimpse into the quiet perseverance it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Meeting Flora Duffy

I first met Flora a few days before the shoot. What immediately struck me was her genuine humility. Despite her accomplishments, she carried no airs or attitude. Instead, she was relaxed, approachable, and completely focused on making the shoot a collaboration.

Together with Jill Dill, PR Projects Manager at the Bermuda Tourism Authority, we sat down to discuss creative ideas and the overall feel we wanted for the project.

During the meeting, Flora turned to me and said, “Look, Nhuri, you’re the professional. You tell me what to do and I’ll make it work.”

Hearing those words set the tone for the entire experience. They reflected the trust and openness that allowed creativity to flourish throughout the day. It is rare to find someone so accomplished who is still so eager to listen and collaborate.

Capturing Strength and Authenticity

Flora Duffy’s presence in front of the camera was effortless. She embodied strength, poise, and a natural authenticity that required no coaching or staged moments.

My creative goal for the shoot focused on two key elements:

• Showcase the powerful blend of beauty and resilience that defines Flora Duffy
  
• Highlight the natural beauty of Bermuda’s landscapes in a way that complemented her story
  

  

We started the day early, arriving at Horseshoe Bay just before sunrise. The timing could not have been more perfect. A soft ocean mist rose from the wave breaks, filling the air with a dreamlike haze. Flora moved through the quiet beach setting with ease, the early morning light adding a cinematic quality to each frame.

After capturing a strong series of sunrise images, we transitioned to Tucker’s Point Golf Course. The wide-open spaces, manicured greens, and sweeping ocean views offered a clean and vibrant contrast to the raw textures of the beach.

Our final location was the old railway trails along South Shore, a path rich with history and rugged coastal beauty. The worn trails, rocky edges, and sea vistas captured not just the scenery but also the resilience and adventurous spirit that Flora represents.

Throughout each location, Flora brought her authentic self.

Her comfort in front of the camera made every moment feel effortless and genuine.

Reflections on the Experience

Photographing Flora Duffy was a reminder that true greatness often moves quietly. It is rooted not in showmanship, but in years of disciplined effort, humility, and belief in the process.

From the misty mornings at Horseshoe Bay to the rugged trails overlooking the ocean, every moment with Flora reinforced the connection between Bermuda’s spirit and her own journey.

This project was never about creating perfect, polished portraits. It was about documenting a story:
